“Suck Less” when taking ad deals

Posted in Post by sapodcasters on May 30th, 2007

Getting around the “Suck Less…” pitch Recently there has been gumbling in the Pod-o-Sphere over the recent “Suck Less” commercials from Podshow. Wouldn’t you know that someone would come up with a way to remove the “Suck Less” so that shows will…….suck less.

Host of the Financial Aid Podcast and Podcamp co-creator Christopher S. Penn has posted this on his “Marketing Over Coffee” site.

A couple of things come to mind: 1. In the New Media if you do things the Old Media way someone will come up with a way to get around it. 2. Being part of the New Media means doing things differently. Running 30 second or 59 second ads day in and day out across the board in the same spot will not work and probably alienate the same folks you’re trying to “market to”.

So don’t do it.

Being “New Media” mean just that. New as in doing things differently. New as in be creative. New as in don’t offend the “early adopters” who are your biggest fans.

I have always liked the Paul Harvey sales pitch model. He starts sharing a story, usually about his own experiences, and by the time you’re halfway into it you realize he’s talking about a product. It is the proverbial V-8 moment. Yet, I’ve never been offended at anything he had to say or at the fact he was “selling me” something. He does it in a genuine and sincere manner that is in line with his show.

That’s the key to staying true to your show and being able to earn a dollar. Do that and your listeners will not only appreciate it, they’ll stick around for more and spread the word.

Cheers, Jennifer Navarrete

PodCamp San Antonio Success!

Posted in Events by sapodcasters on May 21st, 2007

000_0501.jpg Well, we did it.

PodCamp San Antonio was a success!

It took just a little over 2 months to plan and it was great. Thanks to a small but solid group (Michael De Leon, Lans Hobart, Shaine Mata, Richard Galvan, Alysan Delaney-Childs, Nathan Lott and myself) who comprised the team that made this event possible. We had additional members of the SA Podcasters group (Skip/David/Jason, Scot McKay,Fred Castanedaand my personal favorite Alan Weinkratz -who helped out by creating promos, blogging about it and helping to spread the word.

We had generous sponsors: Podcast Ready, Pod Music Countdown, HipCast, Blubrry, Podcast Spot. You can add my printing business MyLabelNet to the list as well. We also had some fellow podcasters & attendees donate to help the cause out. (We checked our email today and found out we had a last-minute donation from WordPress. Thanks Matt!)

So who was in attendance?

Folks of all ages (teen to not-so-teen) who wanted to get started in podcasting, folks who were podcasting, corporate podcasters, video bloggers, podcast producers, internet marketing pros as well as some members of the media.

What was covered? The very basics of blogging, podcasting and vlogging were the first three sessions. It quickly moved to marketing, production, podcasting in education, the evolution of public access and tips on how to avoid burnout just to name a few. You can find out more information in the coming weeks as we release the audio/video sessions on the http://podcampsanantonio.org site.

The media has also been generious. Here is a condensed version (the printed version is longer) of a story that ran in the May 20, 2007 San Antonio Express News

Our fellow New Media brethren have been supportive by positively mentioning PodCamp San Antonio in blog and video posts. We have also been on the receiving end of some nice emails. Thanks!

At the end of PodCamp San Antonio we sat down to unwind and decided we wanted to do this again. So mark your calendars folks. Saturday, May 17, 2008 May 3, 2008. PodCamp San Antonio Numero Dos will be happening.

Wonder what the t-shirts will look?

Cheers, Jennifer Navarrete
